Can the BNF version bind to other brands of transmitters? Specifically a Spectrum DX6i?

No, it can only bind to Walkera Devo series Transmitters.
Generally transmitters will only bind to their own brand of RX even though they operate in the same frequency range. DEVO will not work with Spektrum, Futaba, etc and vice versa.
